Angus Rands was born in Ilkley, but later moved to Harrogate. He is best known for his pastels and watercolours of the Yorkshire Dales. He contributed to The Artist and Leisure Painter. Although trained in pharmacy, he became a professional artist in 1960. He was elected a member of the Pastel Society. He exhibited at the Mall Galleries and other galleries in London and the North.

He often uses very broad strokes of pastel or oil to build his landscapes, giving them a plein air vibrancy and life. He introduces the acid yellow of oilseed rape into many of his Spring and early summers farmland with a sureness of touch which integrates this relative newcomer into the English landscape.

Rands excels at depicting cloud, light, wetness and snow and shows amazing empathy with the keynotes of all the seasons.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Twentieth-century British landscape artists frequently used pastel to rapidly capture changing atmospheric light, weather conditions, and topography. This medium allowed for rich textural application, subtle colour blending, and expressive draughtsmanship depicting rural subjects.

Artists often apply a light watercolour wash on heavy textured paper or board to establish undertones before layering soft or hard pastels. The combination provides tonal depth alongside dry, expressive line work and opaque surface highlights.

Authentic works feature direct hand application of pastel chalks, visible paper tooth, artist signatures in pastel or pencil, and period-appropriate mounting or paper oxidation consistent with age.

Pastoral landscapes pair well with natural wood furniture, neutral linen textiles, and earth-toned walls. Hanging artwork framed in simple wood moulding adds warmth and subtle character to contemporary or classic spaces.

Pastel artwork requires framing under glass with a mount or spacers to prevent the powder from touching the glass directly. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme heat to avoid fading and paper deterioration.
