Pastel portraiture gained immense popularity in France during the 18th century, particularly championed by artists like Maurice Quentin de La Tour and Jean-Baptiste Perronneau, prized for capturing lifelike skin tones and soft textures.

These works typically utilise dry pigment pastels on heavy laid paper or vellum, housed within hand-carved, gessoed and gilded wooden frames featuring bevelled glass and protective backing boards.

Authentication involves examining the paper texture for age-appropriate toning, inspecting the frame for period construction methods such as mitred joints and hand-applied gesso, and checking for genuine pastel dust trapped under the glass rather than modern printing dots.

Pairing an ornate gilded frame with minimalist modern surroundings creates a striking focal point, allowing the historical piece to add warmth, texture, and character to a neutral scheme.

Pastels must be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and should never be placed near moisture sources; framing should remain hermetically sealed to prevent pigment migration.
