This nineteenth-century Victorian garden urn is cast in iron with a weathered terracotta red paint finish. The neoclassical style body shows a fluted lower section beneath a band of draped festoons, finished with a matching domed lid and a pointed finial sitting on top. The piece rests upon a circular pedestal base adorned with traditional moulded details, showing significant surface wear and aged texture across the entire exterior. Standing 57 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, the urn has substantial proportions suitable for various interior settings. Placed in a home today, it functions as a decorative urn on a fireplace hearth, adding traditional architectural character to a sunlit conservatory or living space, where the aged painted surface provides a striking historic focal point without needing further restoration.

FAQs

Popularised during the Victorian era, cast iron urns were manufactured to imitate classical stone vessels for estate gardens and public parks. Foundries produced these durable objects using sand moulds, allowing classical detailing to be replicated efficiently.

Foundries created cast iron urns by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, often casting individual sections such as the pedestal base, fluted body, and decorative lid. These components were subsequently secured together using internal iron threaded rods or interlocking joints.

Authentic period pieces feature heavy structural weight, crisp casting details showing classical motifs like fluting or festoons, and visible seam lines from multi-part sand moulds. Natural weathering, layering of historic paint, and surface oxidisation also indicate genuine age.

Positioned on a fireplace hearth, sideboard top, or deep window sill, a weathered urn introduces textural contrast against modern materials. It functions effectively as a standalone sculptural object or as a container for dried botanicals.

Keep the piece dry indoors or sheltered outdoors to prevent severe moisture damage and brush away loose surface dirt gently. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax helps stabilise flaking historic paint without stripping the original patina.
