He was educated at Leeds High School and during the evenings studied at Leeds School Of Art under Gilbert Foster who was a pioneer of the art colony at Staithes.

Owen Bowen received his first paint box as a christmas present when he was four. His brother, Miles, provided his initial art training but he soon came under the influence of Gilbert Foster at evening classes in the Leeds School of Art and privately at his studio.

He first exhibited in 1888 at the age of fifteen. The Yorkshire Union of Artists was formed in that year and he was involved at the very outset, winning two medals in the amateur section. At the second annual exhibition, four of his landscapes were hung in prominent positions. A fracas with the secretary during the third annual exhibition resulted in his expulsion at the age of only seventeen.

He had his own studio at eighteen and started exhibiting at the Royal Academy the following year. During the subsequent years, he regularly visited Staithes. To assist these summer activities, he rented a cottage for over ten years at Robin Hood's Bay. He exhibited extensively and mounted two major exhibitions of his own work.

This oil painting belongs to the British Impressionism period, dating from 1920, and depicts a pastoral cattle subject along a riverbank composition under a cloudy sky. The artwork is executed in oil on canvas, showing earthy green tones alongside browns and blues, applied with thick impasto brushwork, and is housed in a clean framed condition measuring 52 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for placement above the mantel in an English Country House style interior, the piece portrays cows drinking at the water edge beside a large leafy tree with textured foliage and a dynamic cloudscape overhead. The composition captures a tranquil rural scene near the river Wharfe, reflecting the traditional plein-air techniques associated with the Staithes Group of Artists.

British Impressionism emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, characterised by fluid impasto brushwork, atmospheric depictions of natural light, and outdoor painting techniques applied to rural landscapes.

Painters during this period typically applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen canvas or wood panel, utilizing linseed oil media and protective natural varnish coatings.

Authentic works feature period-correct canvas preparation, artist signatures with consistent monogram styles, surface craquelure appropriate to age, and evidence of historical stretcher marks.

Position the piece as a focal artwork above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing it with contemporary furniture or minimalist framing to create a balanced dialogue between traditional subject matter and modern aesthetics.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoid direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, and consult a professional conservator for surface varnish removal or paint layer stabilization.
