An oak, ebony inlaid and part ebonised library desk, circa 1860, by Charles Hindley & Sons, London, of freestanding form, fitted with eleven graduated drawers to the front, and conforming dummy drawers to the back, original ebonised knob handles, old tan leather inset writing surface with tooling, on plinth bases incorporating original castors, stamped 'C. Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford St., London, 53862' to central drawer.

Provenance: St. Mary Abbots Court, London.

Charles Hindley & Sons were established at 31 & 32 Berners Street, London, moving to Oxford Street when they took over the cabinet makers Miles & Edwards in 1844. The company was a noted furniture maker, received a Royal Warrant of Appointment and exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
