A good quality and attractive Victorian harlequin davenport made from beautiful burr and figured walnut. The hidden sprung stationary compartment has a walnut interior with 3 small drawers and pigeon holes with a carved gallery above. The piano shaped fall opens to reveal a real drawer and a false drawer interior the right hand drawer pull, opens the side stationary drawer. The adjustable pull out writing / reading slope retaining the original gold and blind tooled leather writing surface.The panelled front with top quality carved cabriole leg supports resting on a shaped plinth with turned feet and hidden castors. The right hand side with 4 mahogany lined drawers all with turned walnut knobs, stationary drawer, brass escutcheons and working locks (with keys). The left side with false drawers and matching turned knobs and escutcheons. The freestanding back with matching figured walnut panel and applied mouldings. The whole in very good condition with good patina and offered at a great price. Davenports of this design are often referred to as Harlequin, Pop up, Piano top, or Jack in the box davenports.
