French Bronze Lidded Urn By Auguste Cain

£395    $529    €463
Late 19th Century, French Bronze Grecian Urn by Auguste Nicholas Cain (1822-1894). The lid with a finial of Hercules with his club over his shoulder and wearing the pelt of the Nemean Lion. The body modelled with a roundel featuring (likely) Hercules in death being carried up to Olympus in a Chariot and winged cherub on one side, the face of probably Minerva, the Goddess who was his protector in life, on the other, all among trailing vines and Greek style designs, signed ‘Cain.’ All set upin three lion paw feet.

Very good condition overall, typical minor age related wear to high points. The top rim of the urn not perfectly round so the lid rim does not seat exactly inside the body, but this does not detract at all from the presentation.
