Superb Documented Early C19th Mahogany Double-sided 'Partners' Desk by M.willson , London.

19th century
Description

Superb documented early C19th mahogany double-sided 'partners' desk by M.Willson , London.

Well-proportioned free-standing pedestal desk , fitted 9 graduated drawers to one side and fitted 3 frieze drawers and cupboards to the opposing side .

Excellent quality throughout, all the drawers with moulded edges, high quality mahogany linings and fitted with original turned knob pulls, brass locks and raised brass 'Bramah' type key escutcheons . The reverse panelled doors each enclosing a cupboard fitted with an original adjustable shelf .

The pedestals each raised on castors beneath plinth bases .

The moulded edge top with gently curved corners . The inset writing surface fitted with a top quality replacement tooled leather top (approximately 20 years old) which has achieved a wonderful aged and worn tan / green patination. The leather with rubbed and aged gold tooling, together with 'blind' tooling and Greek key pattern outer surround, separated into in 3 reserve panel sections. Some historic marks and stains to the leather, commensurate with age, use and purpose.

The top frieze drawers to each side bearing the stamp of the renowned and esteemed London retailers "M.Willson , 68, Great Queen St. , London " .

The London firm of Thomas Willson is recorded as a furniture broker and appraiser at 68 ,Great Queen Street between 1821-29. From 1830-37 the business was continued by his widow Mary and his son Matthew using the stamp "M.Willson" , as seen here on this desk . It is commonly believed that the Willsons were solely dealers and used their stamp as a means of identification. The stamp has been found on pieces of C18th and C19th furniture stamped also by other firms such as Gillows. The build quality and grade of timber used in this particular desk indeed suggests a possible attribution to Gillows as the original makers , though as commonly the case with their output , unmarked.

In excellent original condition throughout with no damage, splits or repairs . Good rich consistent patination , and the desk has been cleaned and waxed in our workshops ready for use .

Supplied with the original key which operates all the matching original locks .

A boldly-scaled desk of practical and elegant proportions, which separates into 3 sections in the traditional manner , for ease of movement and transportation. The kneehole space between the pedestals of a particularly accommodating size , which provides ample space for a comfortable seating position and legroom option.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
