A majestic and exceptional antique Kurk Kashan rug from the early 20th century in outstanding condition. One of the best examples we have seen from Kashan, the variety of dyes, quality of wool and the workmanship to implement this intricate classical design make this rug one of the best examples.  The soft kurk wool used is dense and cut finely and to perfection across this desirable rug.  A beautiful and collectable rare rug in perfect order.

Kashans are highly treasured and classed among the very best Persian carpets and rugs. Kashan is north of Isfahan in the centre of Persia, this is also a town where fine rugs and carpets were woven, both have similarities in design and colour.  Kashan is the oldest carpet-producing city in Central Persia. Famous for its production of silk carpets, carpet weaving was revived in the late 19th century. There are different grades of Kashan rugs due to the the wool used and the best were known as Kurk or Mohtasham Kashan rugs.  The kurk or kork wool was the finest and softest wool from around the sheeps neck.

Kashan rugs originate from the historic city of Kashan in central Iran, a major centre of fine textile production since the Safavid period. These rugs typically feature a prominent central medallion set on an intricate field of floral palmettes, scrolling vines, and corner spandrels.

Kurk Kashan rugs are crafted using Kurk wool, which is high-grade wool sheared from the underneck of sheep, woven onto a strong cotton warp and weft foundation. This fine material allows for extremely high knot density and precise detail in complex floral patterns.

Authentic Kashan rugs display high knot counts, finely detailed floral ornamentation, and a smooth, dense pile. Examining the reverse side reveals clear, distinct knots and minimal distortion in the hand-woven structure.

A classic Kashan rug anchors living rooms, dining spaces, or entrance halls by grounding neutral contemporary seating or rich timber furniture. The deep indigo blue and terracotta red tones provide contrasting texture and pattern against polished wood or stone flooring.
