Description

Circa 1870, exhibition quality two piece satinwood writing desk. With an ivory trade label of ‘Edward and Roberts, 148-160 Wardour St., 532 Oxford Street, London’. The top has a wrap around, shaped brass gallery and a central design of a chariot being led by a pair of birds, with their beaks and eyes dotted with mother of pearl. Beneath are three doors, with the middle section dropping down to form a writing surface. The centre panel depicts Britannia on her throne, and the sides have motifs of urns with flowers, swags, rams heads and multiple inlays.

The interior of the top section is in satinwood, with plum pudding, and beneath is the main writing surface. The top is decorated with marquetry designs of musical instruments, and pulls open to reveal a satinwood, kingwood and crossbanded writing surface. It stands on four satinwood and inlaid tapering legs, united by a crossover stretcher with scallop shell inlay.
