Bronze Mask

1920 - 1940
Description

Unusual 1930's Art Deco bronze mask with an emerald and gold colored face in the Aztec style.

Original Aztec masks would have been used as ornaments and were sometimes used as part of a ritual, or as a death mask. Later on in history the idea was adapted so that they became hand held masks made of a lighter material, covering the faces of dancers at masquerade balls. This fashion continues today in some countries.

This bronze mask is displayed on an Art Deco style, pyramid shaped black marble base.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Stylized bronze masks have long played a role in various cultural traditions, notably in West Africa and early 20th-century European modernist movements inspired by traditional tribal art. Artisans used lost-wax casting methods to produce detailed metallic faces for ceremonial or decorative display.

These sculptures are cast using bronze alloy, a mixture primarily composed of copper and tin. The green coloration, known as verdigris, is achieved through chemical patination processes applying acids or salts to accelerate natural metal oxidisation.

Authentic bronze pieces feature significant weight, cold-to-the-touch metallic surfaces, and natural variation in the patination depth. Inspecting seam lines, foundry marks, and the quality of attached mounting bases helps verify period construction.

Place the sculpture on a neutral surface such as a marble mantelpiece or dark wood sideboard to highlight its colour contrast. Pair it with structured greenery, architectural books, or minimalist glass accents to complement its sculptural form.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can strip the delicate patina and compromise the polished metal finishes.
