Moxhams Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Edwards credits the firm of of Gillows with the invention of the Davenport desk in the late 18th-century and describes this piece as ‘one of the few extant examples of that time’.
Susan E. Stuart in her recent publication on Gillows is less certain but acknowledges that it seems likely that the firm did indeed design and make the first davenport. On plate 566 she illustrates a late 18th century two pedestal desk with very similar handles, feet and cup casters to this piece although no surviving drawings of late 18th davenports exist.
From this we determine that although there is no firm evidence that Gillows made this davenport in c.1800, it seems very likely that they did.
