Turkmen saddle bags were traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of Central Asia, including the Tekke and Salor tribes, for practical use during migrations and to store household possessions.

These pieces are usually hand-knotted from hand-spun sheeps wool using natural vegetable dyes, featuring tight knotting and flat-woven backs with cotton or wool foundations.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries display characteristic tribal motifs such as guls, natural abrash in the red dye, wool of high lanolin content, and traditional asymmetric knotting.

They are often framed as textile art, used as small decorative wall hangings, or repurposed as distinctive tabletop accents and pillow faces in eclectic or traditional spaces.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming with mesh protection, avoiding direct prolonged sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the textiles in dry conditions away from moisture and insect activity.
