Fine Rosewood Davenport by Gillows of Lancaster

Description

A very good quality and throughly original mid-19th century rosewood DAVENPORT by Gillows of Lancaster.

This fine example has many superb original features which include: rosewood gallery; original gilt-tooled leather; fitted interior with 2 small drawers; "secret" pen-and-ink drawer (with pair of inkwells); large slides to both sides; three long mahogany-lined drawers (dummies opposite); original melon-carved feet with concealed castors, and the whole top slides forward for use.

It is stamped: GILLOWS * LANCASTER to the leading edge of the top, and one drawer is signed by the actual cabinetmaker (John Herbert) and dated 1854. Original working Bramah key.
