Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, ebonised furniture gained popularity across Europe and colonial territories, often produced in regions like India for the export market. These pieces combined traditional indigenous hand-carving skills with British furniture forms, producing heavily detailed chest structures finished with dark stains to simulate solid ebony.

These chests are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as teak or rosewood, hand-carved with deep relief foliage motifs. The dark colour is achieved via ebonising stains, and drawers usually feature hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber backs, and turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carving variation rather than machine uniformity, hand-planed rear panels, and age-consistent wear to the dark finish on drawer handles and edges. Drawer runners will show natural smooth friction wear from historical use.

Place the piece against a light or neutral wall to emphasize the dark silhouette and carved texture. Pair with simple contemporary artwork or minimal ceramics on top to balance the detailed decorative surface.

Dust regularly using a soft, natural-bristle brush to clear dust from deep relief carvings. Avoid harsh water-based cleaners; apply a small amount of microcrystalline wax or specialist dark paste wax to protect the ebonised surface.
