Here is an example of a very good quality antique French oak & leather carved provincial French 3rd Empire centre room desk, circa 1890. Encompassing a good quality single green leather top with a gold-tooled perimeter, the top has a lovely thumb-molded edge. Below, there is a bank of five working drawers; all featuring carved inverted moulded drawer fronts, all of which retain their original brass handles & escutcheons. The oak lined drawers are constructed with hand-dovetailed joints, oak drawer bottoms and quarter beading to the frame. The centre drawer features the original working lock (with a working key). There is a pretty shaped frieze below the central drawer. The shaped apron is continued all the way round the desk. Floral carved mouldings adorn the corners of the desk frame. The sides and back of the desk feature inset fielded oak panels. The desk stands on elegant cabriole legs with carved toes.
This style of desk was designed to be freestanding in the middle of the room; this is why there is decorative detail on the sides and to the back of the desk. This is a single piece desk and does not dismantle.
Condition Report:
The desk is in excellent original condition. The green leather is in very good condition. There are no marks, stains or scratches to the top of the leather. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the desk frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There is no missing handles or any damage to the frame or legs. All drawers are smooth running and close flush to the frame. The central drawer retains its original working lock (with a working key). This item is solid in joint and ready to be used.
