Fine Waring & Gillows Mahogany Roll Top Desk.

1900 - 1920
Description

Here we have what is almost un-doubtably a one off piece of furniture made by WARING & GILLOWS of LANCASTER. It was part of a suite of boardroom furniture manufactured by Waring and Gillows for the boardroom of EAST BROTHERS Ltd of 127 SOUTH ROAD, DUNDEE who were cabinet and furniture makers from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century.

This large and very impressive desk has been manufactured from the very best mahogany. The drawers all being veneered in flame mahogany, cock beaded and with polished mahogany drawer linings. The roll top front has been quarter veneered in flame mahogany with carved decoration to the corners. There is a very nice carved moulding to the middle of the desk. The pedestals stand on bracket feet all round. The ends, inner ends and back are all mahogany panelled so the desk could be free standing.

The interior is fitted with drawers, pigeon holes and a central cupboard. There is also a pull out writing section with three leather panels, the middle one is adjustable via a ratchet beneath.

The piece is in exceptionally good condition and is of the very best of quality manufacture. We have provided photographic evidence of its providence, the picture photographed is an original watercolour of the full suite provided by Waring and Gillows with the original sales label on the back which we have also pictured showing the date and the sales person. The picture is not included as the clients the desk was purchased from wish to keep it with the rest of the suite which they still own. The name of Thomas and Wilkie on the label is the firm of Dundee Architects who carried out the work on the office for East Brothers at the time.

SIZE; 54" wide by 31" from front to back by 45" high overall.

Declaration

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
