Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1800s.
This beautiful example of Gillows workmanship features: turned baluster gallery; original tooled leather writing surface; fitted interior with 2 drawers which are fronted in the finest satinwood veneers I have ever seen; original braid and ornate pinned document holder to the inside of the lid; "secret" hinged pen-and-ink drawer; large slides to both sides; three mahogany-lined drawers (dummies opposite) and typical carved "melon" feet with original castors.
The whole top slides forward when in use, and this is in remarkably good and original condition. Signed "GILLOW" to the top of the first drawer. A stunning and beautiful davenport.
