This is a superb quality 3ft wide Georgian style cylindrical inlaid leather desk, circa 1920.
There is a bank of seven pigeonholes in the centre of the desk; two small doors, which feature floral parquetry and string inlay to door fronts, flank the pigeonholes. The desk features a very useful pullout-writing base with an aged green and black-tooled leather top, which increases the working greater working space available. The pullout base features the original brass knobs; likewise, the tambour and drawer fronts feature the original brass knobs and handles. Below, there are three working drawers. The two outer drawers are inlaid with satinwood and the drawer opening is cock-beaded. Likewise, the central drawer front is also cock-beaded but it also features a very pretty floral parquetry inlaid centre. The hand dovetailed drawer linings are constructed of mahogany. The desk sits on four elegant satinwood string inlaid tapering legs. It is rare to see a cylindrical desk displaying such quality in an excellent condition.
Condition Report:
The desk is in excellent working condition. There are no missing drawers or compartments to the interior. There are no ink or water stains on the top of the desk to the polish (which is common on these desks). The tambour is smooth running and is not stiff to move up or down. Some nominal old use marks to the aged brown leather but this only helps increase the “old feel” to the leather (see photos). The desk boasts hand-dovetailed drawers and its original brass knobs and handles. Free of worm-worm, solid in joint and ready to use. All in all, this in a stunning item ready to be used.
