A Truly Superb Davenport by Gillows!

19th century
Description

A really wonderful quality satinwood SLIDING-TOP DAVENPORT by Gillows of Lancaster, stamped, signed and in remarkably good original condition.

This superb davenport retains all of its original features which include:

** Original solid baluster gallery

** Gilt-tooled leather writing surface

** Satinwood lined interior; 2 small drawers

** Original green gilt-pinned letter braidwork

** Large satinwood slides to both sides

** Hinged "secret" pen-and-ink drawer

** Original pair of ink bottles; satinwood lids

** Three mahogany-lined main drawers

** Dummy drawers to the opposite side

** Carved "melon" feet with original castors...

...and the whole top slides forward for use. Beside the original Bramah lock, it is stamped "GILLOW" and underneath one of the inner small drawers is the signature in pencil of the actual cabinetmaker: John Herbert.* Faultless condition and a wonderful warm colour.

* John Herbert is fully recorded in the book" "Gillows of Lancaster & London" by Susan E. Stuart, Volume 2 page 248. Various references to him and his work can be found dated 1820-1840. A full description of Gillows davenports and pictures are detailed in Volume 2 pages 31-33.

** The copy (below) of an original Gillows drawing, shows an identical davenport which was supplied to Ferguson & Co., furniture retailers in Oxford Street London, who were in partnership with Gillows.
