This is a superb quality late Victorian solid oak 4ft 6” wide roll top pedestal desk, circa 1880. It boasts four graduated drawers in each pedestal. The right hand pedestal features a filing drawer in the bottom drawer of the pedestal.
On each side of the tambour, there is a posting slot for mail (this allowed people to post mail into the desk while the tambour was locked). There is an oak modesty board, with two pullout-writing slides above 4 drawers in each pedestal. The interior has 14 internal drawers and 13 internal compartments and with brass finger hooks and knobs. The desk features a secret locking mechanism when the roll-top is closed which locks all the drawers except the central drawer. The “Angus of London” tambour lock and key are in working order. The desk sits on its original castors. The internal drawers are constructed of sycamore. The oak has an excellent tight grain with a wax finish. The desk dismantles into three sections for easy storage or transportation.

The desk features a rich golden oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:
The desk is in excellent original condition. It has recently been cleaned and is in complete working order. There are no missing drawers or compartments to the interior. It features the original “Angus of London” working lock and key. The desk also features its original secret locking mechanism when the roll-top is closed which locks all the drawers except the central drawer. The desk sits on its original castors. There are no large ink or water stains on the desk (which are common on these desks). There are also no splits in the tambour (which is common in these types of desks). Some nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering its age. The internal pedestal drawer linings are constructed of sycamore. Free of wood-worm, solid in joint and ready to use.
