A Fine "Gillows" Mahogany Davenport

Description

GILLOWS of LANCASTER: An excellent example of an early 19th century MAHOGANY DAVENPORT** by this highly regarded firm of cabinetmakers.

In beautiful condition, this fine davenport has many exciting features which include:

* Original cast brass gallery

* Blind-tooled leather writing surface

* Beaded decoration around the sloping/rising top

* Fitted interior with two small drawers

* Large slides to both sides

* Hinged "secret" pen-and-ink drawer

* Good pair of travelling brass-topped inkwells

* Four drawers with military handles to right-hand side

* Sliding top along brass runners

* Gillows "apple" shaped feet with original castors...

...all fully working and in excellent condition.

** Purportedly named after a Captain Davenport who ordered a similar desk from Gillows in the late 18th century. Illustrated in "Gillows of Lancaster" by Susan Stuart; copies of drawings of very similar examples available.
