Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1930s.
It has a rectangular moulded top with canted corners and the original tooled leather writing insert which is full of charm and character. A central drawer spans the width over the ample knee hole and is flanked by two pedestals. The pedestal to the right has two drawers over a single deep drawer while the pedestal to the left has four graduating drawers. All have beautifully figured fronts with feather banding and period design brass handles. The desk has attractive canted corners with reeded decoration and both the sides and back are finished also displaying beautiful figuring. The piece stands on ogee bracket feet and can be split into three sections to aid removal and transportation. Original Georgian desks in this design are very rare indeed, even this much later copy is still almost 100 years old. This particular model proves very good value indeed as a new desk made to this specification would cost upwards of £5k if it were to be commissioned today! It is a wonderful piece and has aged to a lovely warm mellow shade of walnut with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
