Gillows Burr Oak Davenport 1849

Description

A rare and elegant Gillows burr oak Davenport Circa 1849. The piece is signed to one of the interior drawers John Herbert a recorded and accomplished Gillows cabinet maker.

The piece is veneered in rare English burr oak finished with a green leather tooled writing slope. The feet are gardooned and particularly finely carved.

Gillows made the original Davenport to fit Captain Davenports cabin aboard ship. This particular design features in the Gillows Sketch Book reference 5569 & 5570 and is thought to have been commissioned by Lord Cornwallis Lord Lieutenant of Kent. A similar example is displayed in the print room of Victoria & Albert Museum reference E-395

A similar Davenport sold at Bonhams Bracewell collection of Gillows furniture 16th July 2008 lot 127 and made £5,500
