Timberhill Gallery has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The piece is veneered in rare English burr oak finished with a green leather tooled writing slope. The feet are gardooned and particularly finely carved.

Gillows made the original Davenport to fit Captain Davenports cabin aboard ship. This particular design features in the Gillows Sketch Book reference 5569 & 5570 and is thought to have been commissioned by Lord Cornwallis Lord Lieutenant of Kent. A similar example is displayed in the print room of Victoria & Albert Museum reference E-395
