Mid 19th Century Mahogany Pedestal Desk

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

This charming mahogany pedestal desk (circa 1850) is in lovely original condition, with the added benefit of being designed with a filing drawer - the two bottom right hand pedestal drawers are actually constructed to pull out together as one, allowing for the depth required for files.

It has been sensitively and professionally restored - this is only possible because the item in question met our exacting criteria prior to restoration.

The timber and cabinet making should be of good quality - even though this desk is 150 + years old no major cabinet work was needed.

The existing surface should be intact with an underlying good and attractive colour indicative of its age - we only needed to enhance this desk by sensitive cleaning and french polishing.

The locks and escutcheons should predominantly be original to the piece - the locks are all patented and original to the desk,(now serviced and with key)as are the liners to the keyholes.

The existng wooden drawer knobs/handles are predominantly original - we had to turn two on a lathe out of period timber to match, which considering its age and daily use is more than satisfactory.

And importantly the desk should be of the correct height without additions to the pedestals; the measurement from the floor to the underside of the middle drawer needs to be as close to 24 inches as possible - this example measures 23 1/2 inches to the underside of the middle drawer supported by its original castors.

More often than not the existing leather writing surface needs to replaced, or if 'attractively' worn, restored - sympathetically hand colured and tooled quality hide was used in this case.

Declaration

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.
