Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lithography developed in the late 18th century as a planographic printing method using stone or zinc plates. During the 19th century, artists frequently enhanced black-and-white lithographic impressions by applying watercolours by hand to reproduce detailed historical portraits and costume studies.

The artworks were printed with oil-based ink on wove paper and coloured with watercolour washes. Frames were typically constructed from softwood lined with cast gesso ornamentation and finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces display smooth ink lines characteristic of lithography rather than modern halftone dots visible under magnification. Hand colouring exhibits subtle variation in watercolour application and slight bleed beyond the printed outlines.

Positioning traditional gilt-framed portraits against contemporary dark or neutral backdrops creates visual contrast. Grouping historical prints alongside modern artwork on a gallery wall integrates period character into current decor schemes.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing. Use UV-filtering glass when re-framing, and dust the giltwood frame gently with a dry, soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
