Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1890s.
It is constructed from the highest quality timbers with magnificent brass inlays along with quality Bramah locks. It is topped with a pierced brass gallery above three oak lined working drawers over three faux drawers which hide a secret compartment operated via a locking spring mechanism. The pull out writing insert displays the original tooled brown leather surface and when fully pulled out it provides ample room leg room beneath for the user, unusual for such a relatively small desk. The desk also benefits from a central drawer over knee hole containing a working lock that controls the locking mechanism securing all the drawers in a single turn. This central drawer is flanked by four smaller oak lined drawers with brass handles. The desk stands majestically on beautifully turned reeded legs having fabulous brass inlays and mouldings whilst sitting on brass feet. The walnut is a lovely warm medium shade with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
