An Antique Crested Fireback

18th century
Description

This fireback was removed from a substantial Elizabethan property where it was bricked into the rear of a large fireplace. It is extremely heavy and can only just be lifted by 2 men. It bears the date 1662 and the letters C P either side of a Royal crest. Firebacks are extremely difficult to date but its weight, thickness and casting quality of both the front and rear would indicate that it is at least Georgian if not earlier.

It measures 92cms wide by 76 cms max high by 3.5 cms thick.
