17th Oil Portrait King Charles 1st After Sir Peter Lely Historic Royal Paintings

17th century
Description

17th Century Portrait Charles I Wearing The Order Of The Garter Circle Of Lely

A very reasonably priced portrait of a sought after Royal sitter, this image was reportedly a final image of Charles in the tower before his untimely execution.

This is a stunning early 17th century rendition of famous Royal sitter King Charles I in an identical pose after Sir Peter Lely’s original of 1647 in which the King is painted alongside his son James Duke Of York 1633-1701.

This fine oil on canvas portrait is a reduced version Circle of Lely after the last original which was was known to have been painted during King Charles internment at Hampton Court Palace.

ABOUT ARTIST SIR PETER LELY

Born Soest, Westphalia, 14 September 1618 died London, 30 November 1680).

Painter of Dutch origin who spent almost all his career in England and was naturalized in 1662. His family name was originally van der Faes, and the name Lely is said to have come from a lily carved on the house in The Hague where his father was born.

Lely was born in Germany (where his father, a captain of infantry, was stationed) and trained in Haarlem.

He moved to England in the early 1640s (early biographers say 1641 or 1643), and although he first painted figure compositions in landscapes (Sleeping Nymphs, c.1650, Dulwich Picture Gal., London), he soon turned to the more profitable field of portraiture where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court.

This would have been Artist Sir Peter Lely’s first commission when arriving in England and depicted the King as he appeared at the end of his life.

As an early work, the influence of Van Dyck is apparent in Lely’s depiction which makes this portrait a desirable work of art to acquire.

This seventeenth-century Baroque oil painting depicts King Charles I in profile wearing a white lace collar and a dark garment, rendered in oil paint on canvas within a carved giltwood frame. The palette relies primarily on dark brown tones combined with white highlights on the collar and pale grey in the sash, while the frame exhibits surface wear and aged gilding along its moulded edges. The artwork measures 89 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It suits placement above the mantel in a gentleman's library, hanging securely against a wall to anchor the room's interior design. Created in the style of Sir Peter Lely, the portrait presents the royal sitter in historic attire from the period of the English Civil War. The canvas bears the remnants of an historic clean and application of varnish, reflecting normal age-related wear appropriate for a historic royal portrait. Collectors can mount this framed piece on a prominent wall in a study or formal reception room, where the dark tones of the oil medium complement traditional interior schemes.

British Baroque portraiture of the 17th century featured dramatic chiaroscuro, formal regal poses, and detailed rendering of clothing, such as lace collars and silk sashes, to convey status and authority.

Portraits were typically executed using hand-ground oil pigments on stretched linen canvas or timber panels, housed within carved and gilded timber frames.

Authentic period portraits display natural craquelure consistent with age, hand-carved stretcher bars or wood panels, and historical oxidisation on the paint and varnish layers.

Position the portrait as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or sideboard in a traditional room scheme, or juxtapose it against minimal contemporary furniture for an eclectic aesthetic.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the surface gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional picture restorer for cleaning.
