This seventeenth-century Baroque oil painting on canvas depicts a collection of fowl and animals in a pastoral landscape setting. The palette is dominated by dark brown tones, brought to life with chiaroscuro lighting that highlights the textures of feathers and a copper vessel detail. The composition includes a large turkey, several chickens, guinea pigs, and ducks arranged around the metallic container against a backdrop of castle ruins. The canvas has been professionally relined to preserve the artwork. It measures 120 cm high by 99 cm wide. Positioned for display above the mantel, this large artwork fits naturally within a gentleman's library or a formal reception room. The deep tones and dramatic lighting create a focal point that anchors traditional interior schemes. Hanging hardware attached to the reverse allows for secure wall mounting in a domestic setting. The pastoral subject matter provides a historic decorative element suited for period properties and classic interior designs.

Italian Baroque animal art from the 17th century is defined by its dramatic use of chiaroscuro lighting, naturalistic rendering of livestock and poultry, and dark atmospheric backdrops often incorporating architectural or landscape elements.

Artists during this period typically painted on hand-woven linen canvas mounted onto wooden stretchers, using hand-ground mineral and organic pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil.

Authentic paintings of this era display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the reverse side of the canvas, and visible hand-hammered joinery or hand-cut stretchers.

A dark Baroque canvas can be mounted as a focal point above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantel, illuminated by dedicated picture lighting to draw out the deeper tonal details.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and humid environments, dusting the surface occasionally with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.
