Antique Chinese Bronze Tripod Censer Pierced Lotus Floral Lid Xuande Mark C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Chinese Bronze Tripod Censer with Pierced Lotus Floral Cover and Xuande Mark, c.1900

An attractive antique Chinese bronze incense burner or censer, probably dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1930.

Of compact rounded form, the censer is raised upon three short tapering feet and fitted with a removable domed pierced cover surmounted by a pointed knop.

The cover is finely pierced with stylised lotus and floral scrollwork, enclosed by a repeating geometric key-fret border. The openwork construction would originally have allowed incense smoke to escape through the decorative pattern when in use.

The underside is particularly decorative, cast with a dragon medallion surrounding a six-character Xuande reign mark reading:

大明宣德年製

Dà Míng Xuāndé Nián Zhì

“Made during the Xuande reign of the Great Ming.”

The Xuande Emperor reigned from 1426–1435; however, Xuande marks were frequently copied on Chinese bronze censers for centuries afterwards. This piece is therefore conservatively catalogued as an early-20th-century bronze bearing an apocryphal Xuande mark, rather than as a Ming-period object.

The bronze displays an attractive dark brown patina with areas of lighter wear, oxidation and warmer coppery tones at the feet and raised edges. The interior retains age-related darkening and surface deposits, together with visible turning and finishing marks.

Cast dragons flanking a six-character mark on the base: apocryphal Xuande tribute mark.
Lathe-turning grooves inside the bowl: early twentieth-century metal finishing.

This antique Chinese bronze tripod censer dates to the early 20th century, circa 1900, during the Qing Dynasty style. The compact incense burner is cast in a rounded form with three short tapering feet and fitted with a removable domed pierced cover featuring a lotus finial and a geometric key-fret border. The aged bronze metal displays a dark brown patina with lighter wear, oxidation, and coppery tones on the feet and raised edges, alongside surface rubbing and minor verdigris. The piece measures 7 cm high and 7.5 cm wide. In a home today, this censer functions as a decorative object placed on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study. The openwork construction allows the viewer to observe the intricate scrollwork of the lid, while the base sits steadily upon its three distinct feet.

Chinese bronze censers have been produced for centuries for use in religious rituals, ancestral worship, and scholars studios. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, cast bronze vessels often mimicked ancient ritual forms while serving as functional holders for burning incense.

These censers are typically created using the lost-wax casting method, allowing for detailed decorative elements such as pierced openwork lids and relief patterns. They often feature cast or apocryphal reign marks integrated into the base during manufacture.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear to the metal, genuine surface oxidisation, and proper casting weight appropriate to their scale. Apocryphal marks, such as six-character Xuande marks, were frequently cast onto late Qing and Republic period items as an homage to earlier masterpieces.

An antique censer functions well as a sculptural decorative object on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or coffee table stack. Its patinated metallic finish complements dark wood surfaces, natural stone, and contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate piercings. Avoid chemical polish, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these can strip away the historical surface patina.
