This pair of nineteenth century watercolour paintings depicts equestrian hunting scenes with horse riders and foxhounds in countryside landscapes, rendered in the British Sporting Art style. Signed by T Mortimer, the artworks are executed on paper using watercolour pigments, set behind wash-line mounts and enclosed within gilded wooden frames that display decorative moulding details. The primary colours visible within the compositions are green and blue alongside red coats on the figures. Each piece measures 40 cm in width and 48 cm in height. These decorative works suit placement in an English Country House interior, positioned traditionally above a sideboard or within a living room scheme.

British sporting art emerged prominently in the 18th and 19th centuries, focusing on field sports, foxhunting, horse racing, and countryside activities. Artists emphasised detailed depictions of horses, hounds, and rural landscapes, capturing outdoor pursuits favored by country estates.

Watercolour paintings from this period were executed using water-soluble pigments applied to heavy paper or board. They were typically framed behind protective glass, housed within card mounts, and encased in carved or moulded gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period watercolours feature natural age-related characteristics on the paper, such as light foxing or subtle toning. Examining artist signatures, period framing techniques, hand-drawn mount lines, and paper texture assists in verifying age.

Pairing sporting watercolours alongside tailored timber furniture or leather seating enhances traditional decor. Hanging a paired set symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or along a hallway creates a balanced focal point.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and harsh artificial lighting to prevent pigment fading. Maintain stable humidity levels to protect the paper substrate, and utilise UV-filtering conservation glass when reframing.
