Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Drop handles on shaped backplates: standard pattern from the 1910s.
Carved frieze on the lower rail: low-relief decoration popular in early 20th-century oak.
Straight stiles forming square legs: simple construction typical of early 20th-century bedroom chests.
Neat dovetails at drawer corners: sound joinery from the Edwardian and George V period.
Waxed oak top and drawer fronts: mellow colour across the surfaces.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Arts and Crafts furniture emphasizes functional forms, honest joinery, and natural wood grain finishes. Pieces from this movement frequently incorporate subtle hand-carved organic motifs alongside simple geometric outlines.

Traditional oak chests feature solid wood drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and metal drop handles. Frame construction relies on mortise and tenon joinery for structural stability.

Authentic period pieces show genuine wear patterns around handles and drawer runners, original oxidation on metal hardware, and hand-finished carved detailing across aprons or friezes.

A compact oak chest can serve as a bedside unit, hallway storage cabinet, or living room side piece. Combining light oak tones with neutral textiles balances classic proportion with modern decor.

Maintain light oak by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade clear beeswax once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
