Gents 1954 Longines Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1954 Longines wrist watch.

The watch has a 17 jewel calibre 12.68Z hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 9,379,977 which dates it back to 1954.

The watch measures 34.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in good condition with just general light surface marking, nothing too serious at all. The screw-on case back is signed with the Longines name on both the inside and outside, and it also has a past owner’s name. The case back also states that the watch is waterproof but, as with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

Signed Longines winding crown.

The lens has light marking but you have to look closely to see it (some reflection showing in the photos).

The signed dial is in good condition with original hands.

A new brown leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a Longines presentation box.

Date of Manufacture

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Vintage Longines Wrist Watch to the 1950s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1950s:
Movement serial number 9379977: Longines factory records date the movement to 1954.
Matching three-digit number on lug and case back: original factory-assembled parts.
Gilt arrowhead markers and Arabic numerals: dial design typical of the 1950s.
Gentle golden ageing across the dial: original untouched lacquer.
Screw-down case back with slotted rim: water-resistant casing introduced in the 1940s.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

During the 1950s, Longines produced high-grade mechanical watches featuring clean dial layouts, dart or arrowhead hour markers, and precise in-house Swiss movements. This era is recognized for balanced dress watch proportions and functional elegance.

Mid-century wrist watches typically feature stainless steel or gold-plated cases, acrylic crystals over the dial, and applied brass or gold-toned hour indices. Straps were predominantly crafted from genuine leather.

Authenticity is verified by matching the movement serial number to Longines manufacturing archives, checking for correct brand typography on the dial, and confirming hallmarks or case reference numbers engraved inside the case back.

A mid-century dress watch complements tailored suits for formal occasions, or can be paired with casual knitwear and shirts to add a understated historical reference to daily attire.

Mechanical watches require professional servicing every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. They should be protected from water exposure, strong magnetic fields, and over-winding of the mainspring.
