Trumeau French Mirror with Seascape Oil Painting of Galleons at Sea

19th century
Description

A desirable interior designers piece with sought after subject matter depicting French

Fleet of Galleons, very well painted with good detail.

An antique mirror, usually in a vertical rectangular frame, that features an oil painting, watercolor, or decorative carving at the top is called a trumeau mirror (often pronounced troo-moh).

A fine Oil on Canvas depicting a french fleet of galleons at sea.

The work is mounted as a gilt trumeau mirror. The whole has a wonderful look and would have originally been constructed to be mounted in a panelled interior.

Notice the original panelling which has been retained to re-enforce the back of the frame and behind the mirror section all as found.

The painting has a few patches verso, however you would never know as when seen from the front the surface looks fine and well restored restored

The lower mirror has been replaced in the past and the frame is all good with the usual wear to gilt.

Part of the original backing panel of wood is still in place behind the mirror,

but we are thinking about closing fully with a further piece of board to keep out any moisture.

Note there has been old woodworm in this back panel, but it’s all dead and long gone.

This item would look ok ideally placed above a Demi-lune side table with a nice carriage clock or a pair of Meissen figurines placed in front or the lower mirror to reflect.

Originating in 18th-century France, a trumeau mirror was originally designed to fit into the panelling between windows or directly above a fireplace mantel. The design characteristically combines an upper decorative panel, featuring an oil painting or carved relief, with a lower glass mirror plate set within a unified frame.

Traditional trumeau mirrors feature hand-carved wood frames finished with water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf. The upper section commonly houses an oil painting executed on canvas or panel, while the lower section contains a silvered or mercury glass mirror plate.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age including natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, distressing to the underlying gesso beneath the gold leaf, and traditional lap or mortise-and-tenon joinery on the backboard assembly.

A trumeau mirror serves as a vertical architectural focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or centered over a dining room sideboard. The blend of figurative artwork and reflective glass bridges classical proportion with contemporary room layouts.

Clean the gilded wood moulding using only a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent stripping fragile gold leaf. Apply glass cleaner directly to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying the mirror plate, ensuring liquid does not collect in the frame joints.
