Description

A delightful early 19th century silhouette portrait of Dutch Theologian, Anneaus Yprey (1760-1837).

Ypey is best known for his extensive academic works documenting the history of Protestantism and the development of the church in the Netherlands. His most influential publication is Geschiedenis van de Nederlandsche Hervormde Kerk ('History of the Dutch Reformed Church'). He also wrote comprehensive analyses of the Dutch language, poetry, and classical Christian doctrines, bridging the gap between rigorous academic theology and historical national identity.

The silhouette is finely done with exceptional detail throughout, with his name written in calligraphic from beneath. All housed in a period ebonised and gilt glazed frame.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Chamfered pine backing panel: early nineteenth-century framing method.
Fine engraved crosshatching across the figure: print technique from the subject's lifetime.
Gentle cockling and even darkening across the paper: undisturbed age under glass.
Soft rubbing on the gilded inner slip: many years of handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 19th century Georgian silhouette portrait depicts Dutch theologian Anneaus Ypey (1760-1837). The artwork shows a detailed black profile silhouette on textured brown paper, complete with finely drawn hair, clothing, and cravat. Handwritten script in calligraphy beneath the portrait reads "A. Ypey". The piece is housed in a rectangular wooden frame with a dark ebonised finish, a scalloped gilded sight edge, and a small metal suspension ring mounted to the top. The entire framed object measures 13.5 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. This framed silhouette suits a gentleman's library, study, or hallway, and fits well on narrow wall spaces alongside other small antique portraits or artwork. The neutral tones of the paper and the high contrast of the black silhouette and ebonised frame allow it to blend into both traditional and classic interiors. Hanging hardware on the back permits immediate placement on a wall in a home today.

A silhouette portrait is a profile image of a person, depicted as a solid shape or detailed monochrome graphic, often filled in with black ink or cut from dark paper. They were an affordable and popular method of portraiture in the 18th and early 19th centuries prior to the invention of commercial photography.

Traditional silhouettes were created using cut black paper mounted on card, India ink brushwork, or watercolour on paper, ivory, or plaster. They were commonly presented behind glass in ebonised wooden frames, often featuring brass hangers or gilded inner trims.

Authentic period silhouettes typically exhibit natural paper toning, foxing, and age-appropriate wear to the framing. The execution often includes fine hand-painted hair details, cross-hatching on clothing, original period glass with minor distortions, and contemporaneous handwritten inscriptions.

Antique silhouettes work exceptionally well when arranged in gallery wall groupings alongside contrasting contemporary prints or line drawings. They can also be displayed on narrow wall strips, tucked into bookshelves, or leaned against decorative panelling to add historical character.

To preserve delicate paper artwork, keep the framed piece away from direct sunlight, damp areas, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Ensure the framing uses acid-free mounting materials and consider UV-filtering glass to prevent further fading or paper degradation.
