We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Louis XVI style settee from 1900 is a two seater French gilt sofa designed in the style of a French chateau. The piece uses giltwood, gold leaf and fabric upholstery, finished in gold and cream. The settee displays an oval medallion back, fluted tapered legs, carved leaf detailing and padded armrests, alongside a carved gold frame and a linen cover. It measures 96 cm high, 132 cm wide, 68 cm deep, with a seat depth of 56 cm and a seat height of 43 cm. In a contemporary home, this small sofa provides seating in a living room, bedroom or drawing room. The design suits formal reception rooms or classic boudoirs, offering compact seating for two people.

Louis XVI seating is defined by neoclassically inspired geometry, featuring straight lines, symmetry, and classical motifs such as fluted tapered legs, carved foliage, and oval medallion backs. Frames are commonly crafted from timber coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf.

Traditional construction employs solid carved hardwoods, such as beech or walnut, covered with layers of white gesso plaster and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf are then water-gilded onto the surface and burnished, while seating areas use natural horsehair padding and woven upholstery fabric.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery, structural wooden pegs, and natural surface wear where the red or grey clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. Later reproductions often feature uniform spray-gilding, modern screws, or machine-carved symmetry.

A giltwood settee functions as a sculptural statement piece when paired with modern minimal architecture, neutral linen drapery, and understated contemporary artwork. Positioning the piece against a plain wall allows the metallic frame and detailed carving to provide textural contrast.

Giltwood surfaces require gentle dry dusting with a soft feather duster or natural hair brush; water and chemical solvents must be avoided as they dissolve traditional water-gilding. Upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and cleaned exclusively with specialized dry methods.
