Description

17TH NOBLEMAN OIL PORTRAIT IN A STUNNING FRAME

A fine large Oil Portrait on canvas of a Gentleman wearing a brown cloak from the late 17th century 1690-1700.

( Circle Of ) Artist JOHN CLOSTERMAN

John Closterman (1660-c.1711) developed a strong reputation as one of London's leading portraitists in the late seventeenth century, depicting royalty,

nobility and key society figures of the period.

Closterman was a leader in the race to be London’s leading society portraitist and the sitters would have been acquainted with his talent.

Closterman (also spelled Cloosterman, Klosterman) was born in Osnabrück (now lower Saxony), the son of an artist who taught him the rudiments of design. In 1679 he went to Paris, where he worked for two years in the studio of François de Troy - his work reflects the French Baroque due to this experience.

In 1681 he came to England, and brought an exceptionally luxurious inventiveness which was responsible for some of the remarkable portraits of the period. He painted draperies and other minor details for John Riley, at whose death in 1691, Closterman finished several of his portraits.

The demand for his work soared and by the middle of the decade he set up an independent practice, pushing him further into the higher echelons of society.

In 1696 he was invited to the court of Spain, and executed the portraits of the king and queen.

This seventeenth-century oil painting on canvas depicts a gentleman in the Baroque style, attributed to the circle of John Closterman (1660-1711). The portrait shows a man with dark curly hair wearing a white cravat and a warm brown draped mantle, set within a decorative giltwood frame featuring swept moulded patterns and an antique gold finish. The canvas has been relined in past years and is offered in overall good condition for its age. The framed work measures 92.7 cm high, 79.2 cm wide, and 5.3 cm deep. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a gentleman's library, drawing room, or large hall, this piece brings a traditional focal point to interior settings. The detailed brushwork presents a well-finished face with lifelike glazed eyes, complemented by the rich tones of the mantle and the gilded texture of the surrounding frame. It functions as a historical art piece reflecting late seventeenth-century portraiture traditions.

Seventeenth-century portraiture from the Baroque period typically features dramatic lighting, rich colour palettes, and realistic rendering of fabrics such as silk, velvet, and lace. Artists often focused on conveying the status and personality of the sitter through formal poses, detailed attire, and subtle backdrop gradations.

Paintings from this era were primarily executed using oil paints made from ground natural pigments mixed with drying oils, such as linseed oil. These were applied onto hand-woven linen canvas stretched over timber frames, and frequently presented in hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is evaluated through physical evidence including age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint surface, natural timber oxidisation on the stretcher bars, and weave density of the linen canvas. Scientific methods like pigment analysis and ultraviolet light examination also help confirm historical composition.

A historical oil portrait can serve as a focal point when placed above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or against dark, moody wall tones. Integrating traditional framed portraiture into modern, minimal, or transitional interiors creates a layered and curated aesthetic.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature changes, and high humidity to prevent cracking and canvas distortion. Dusting should be performed gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners.
