Antique Tibetan Nepalese Bronze Tara Figure Buddhist Himalayan Shrine Statue C.1900 14cm

1900 - 1920
Description

An attractive antique Nepalese / Newar bronze figure of Green Tara (Śyāmatārā), probably dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.

Green Tara is depicted seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, with the left leg folded and the right leg pendant, symbolising her readiness to come to the aid of devotees. Her right hand is lowered in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and compassion, while the left hand is raised in vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and discussion.

A pair of stylised utpala lotus stems rise beside the shoulders, while the figure wears an elaborate foliate crown, necklaces, armlets and finely detailed robes. A third eye is visible on the forehead.

The figure is seated upon an openwork lotus throne with a projecting lotus supporting the pendant foot. The reverse is fully modelled, including the bound hair, jewellery and drapery, reflecting traditional Newar workshop practice.

The bronze has developed an attractive dark brown-black patina, with lighter rubbing to raised areas from age and handling. The underside of the base is open and any original sealing or consecration plate is now absent.

The style, iconography and casting are consistent with Kathmandu Valley / Newar Buddhist bronze production, made for devotional use within the broader Himalayan Buddhist tradition.

This Tibetan Nepalese bronze Tara figure follows traditional Himalayan Buddhist design from around 1900. Cast from a copper alloy, the sculpture has developed a dark brown-black patina with lighter rubbing on raised areas, alongside minor casting irregularities and small areas of oxidation. The deity is depicted seated in the posture of royal ease upon an openwork double lotus base, holding varada and vitarka mudra hand gestures. The figure wears an elaborate foliate crown, layered jewellery, and finely detailed robes, with stylised utpala lotus stems rising beside the shoulders and a third eye visible on the forehead. The piece measures 14 cm high and 9.5 cm wide. This small sculptural object is well suited for placement on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desktop within a study or living area as part of a Himalayan art collection or decorative display.

In Himalayan Buddhism, Tara is revered as a bodhisattva representing compassion, protection, and spiritual enlightenment. Metal figures of Tara have been crafted across Tibet and Nepal for centuries, traditionally cast using lost-wax methods to serve as focal points for devotion on private or temple altars.

Traditional Himalayan bronze statues were typically created using the lost-wax (cire perdue) casting technique. They feature copper alloy or bronze compositions, fine hand-chased detailing across the jewellery and lotus throne, and sometimes hollow interiors created to hold sacred relics or prayers.

Authentic antique bronze figures display genuine surface oxidisation, naturally uneven wear on high points from handling, and hand-tooled engraving details rather than modern uniform machine moulding. Examining the base construction and the patination inside unsealed cavities also helps determine age and authenticity.

An antique bronze figure serves as a refined accent piece when displayed on a minimalist bookshelf, side table, or mantelpiece. Pairing dark patinated bronze with natural wood tones, muted textiles, or modern stone creates a serene, curated focal point within modern or eclectic interiors.

Dust the bronze gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural soft-bristle brush. Avoid using chemical cleaners, polishes, or water, as liquid and harsh solvents can strip the historical patina and accelerate surface oxidisation.
