This original Modern British drawing depicts a figurative crowd scene at the Leyburn May Fair, created by Fred Lawson from the 1920 period. The artwork consists of graphite pencil, ink and crayon on paper, finished with soft grey tones and monochrome shading. Visible details include distinct grid lines and a signature inscription dated May thirteenth 1921 near the lower left corner. The composition shows two figures in the foreground facing a dense gathering of people beneath a structural framework. The framed piece measures 44 cm by 54 cm and arrives ready to hang. It suits placement above a sideboard in a living room, hallway or study within an English country house interior.

20th-century Modern British works on paper encompass drawings, watercolours, and prints created in the United Kingdom during the early-to-mid 1900s. These works often captured regional landscapes, local traditions, and everyday social gatherings using expressive draftsmanship and restrained colour palettes.

Artists typically utilised woven or rag paper paired with graphite pencil, Indian ink, and watercolour washes or coloured pencils. The portable nature of these medium combinations made them suitable for plein air sketching and rapid field studies.

Authentic drawings from this period feature genuine period paper exhibiting natural age toning, clear artist signatures, and contemporary date inscriptions. Provenance records, gallery labels on backing boards, and distinct linear style further verify authenticity.

Mount the artwork using acid-free matting and a minimalist wooden frame to highlight the composition against neutral painted walls. Grouping linear monochrome or light watercolour sketches creates a curated gallery wall suitable for traditional or modern settings.

Display the work away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent paper degradation and fading of fugitive pigments. Mount behind UV-filtering protective glass using conservation-grade archival materials to eliminate discolouration and foxing.
