Antique Early 20th Century School Desk | Cast Iron & Inkwell

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century school desk with attached seat, a charming and sturdy piece of good quality, with solid timber on a pair of decorative cast iron frames.

The sloping writing top has a ceramic inkwell and a pen groove to the back edge, with an open book compartment beneath, and the bench seat with its two-plank back faces the desk.

The cast iron ends are pierced and cast with an entwined monogram, and the desk and seat are joined by two long timber floor runners, making it a single stable piece.

The timber shows a bold open grain and a warm, worn colour, and the top still carries the carved initials and marks of its schoolroom life.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age and use. A very desirable piece of nostalgia, a perfect addition to a child's room, study, hallway or as a display piece.

This Edwardian school desk and attached bench seat originates from the early 20th century, combining solid oak with black cast iron frames. The piece displays a dark wood finish with a bold open grain, a sloped writing top containing an open book compartment beneath, and a two-plank bench seat facing the desk. The cast iron ends feature pierced decoration with an entwined monogram, and the entire structure rests on two long timber floor runners. The timber surfaces show historical carved initials and marks from schoolroom use alongside a warm, worn colouration. Measuring 82 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 88 cm deep, the unit stands as a single stable assembly. It provides a practical and nostalgic addition for use in a child's bedroom, a home study, a hallway, or as an interior display item.

An antique cast iron school desk is an educational furniture piece featuring a heavy iron framework integrated with a timber seat and sloped writing desk, widely produced during the late Victorian and early 20th-century eras.

These desks were constructed using durable cast iron bases for stability, paired with solid hardwoods such as oak, pitch pine, or beech for the desktop, bench seat, and backrest.

Authentic pieces feature cast iron frame foundry markings or initials, natural wear on the wooden surfaces, period joinery, and an integrated inkwell aperture or pen groove.

An antique school desk can serve as a compact workstation in a hallway, nursery, or study, complementing industrial, vintage, or rustic interior themes.

Clean the timber using a mild wax polish to maintain the finish, and wipe down the cast iron components with a soft cloth while applying mineral oil or clear wax to prevent metal oxidisation.
