For Sale by Big Sky Fine Art
Description

G. Vaccaro.

Italian ( 19th Century ).

La Contadina.

Pencil & Charcoal On Paper.

Signed & Dated (18)65 Lower Right.

Paper size 28.9 inches x 34.8 inches ( 73.5cm x 88.5cm ).

Frame size 32.3 inches x 38.4 inches ( 82cm x 97.5cm ).

Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art in the English county of Dorset, this large mid-19th century drawing uses traditional and classical drawing techniques. The style and the subject matter looks older as it imitates Renaissance or Baroque figure studies.

The artwork is signed G.Vaccaro and is dated (18)65. The origin is likely to be Italian although the style matches both French and Italian academic schools.

The drawing was sourced by us in the South of France.

The drawing is presented and supplied in a glazed veneered wooden frame dating from the mid-20th century (which is shown in these photographs).

This antique drawing is in very good decorative condition, commensurate with its age. It is in an untouched condition having never been restored. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.

The drawing is signed and dated lower right.

This is an original 1865 pencil and charcoal drawing by G. Vaccaro, signed and dated in the lower right corner. The artwork depicts a seated woman in traditional attire, rendered with fine detail and expressive shading. Dressed in a flowing gown with puffed sleeves and a bonnet, the figure exudes quiet dignity and strength. In the foreground sits a simple bowl of gathered produce, a symbolic element often associated with sustenance, home, and everyday life.

Executed with masterful use of line and shadow, the drawing highlights the artist’s classical technique and sensitivity to form. The strong contours and soft gradations of shading create a timeless composition that blends realism with subtle impressionistic qualities.

This large antique pencil sketch by G. Vaccaro would appeal to collectors of mid-19th century figurative art, traditional portrait drawings, and works celebrating rural or historical themes. It is a fine example of 19th-century European draughtsmanship, ideal for display in a home, gallery, or a private collection.

This original 19th-century figure study is executed in pencil and charcoal on cream-toned paper. The artwork depicts a seated woman wearing a bonnet and a long-sleeved gown alongside a bowl of fruit on the ground, rendered in a Renaissance or Baroque style with dramatic chiaroscuro shading. The monochrome drawing is signed and dated 1865 in the lower right corner and is set behind glass within a dark, flat-profile wooden frame featuring a visible wood grain and squared mitred corners. The complete framed piece measures 82 cm high, 97.5 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Suitable for a traditional interior, this piece is designed to hang on a wall above a sideboard in a gentleman's library, study, or living room. The composition brings a classical focus to a domestic interior, complementing period furnishings and traditional wall art collections.

An academic figure study is a detailed drawing created by an artist to practice the human form, drapery, and chiaroscuro techniques. Popular in 19th-century European art academies, these works frequently drew visual inspiration from classical Renaissance and Baroque compositions.

Artists traditionally utilised natural vine or willow charcoal, black chalk, and graphite on heavy rag or laid paper. Drawings were often executed on toned paper to assist in building subtle mid-tones alongside white chalk highlights.

Authentic period drawings often exhibit natural paper aging, light foxing, and visible chain lines when held to a light source. Artist signatures, dates, classical subject matter, and period-appropriate framing materials further assist in verification.

Displaying framed charcoal drawings against dark or muted walls creates a focused, gallery-like impression. Grouping monochrome figure studies alongside classical oil paintings or minimal contemporary photography provides balance and depth.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, hang charcoal drawings away from direct sunlight and areas with high humidity. Frame the artwork behind UV-protective glass with acid-free archival mounting boards to ensure long-term preservation.
