Rare Antique Chinese Cloisonne Bronze Mythical Beast Censer Qing C1900 18cm 267g

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual and highly decorative Chinese cloisonné enamel and bronze mythical-beast vessel, attributed to the late Qing dynasty / early 20th century, circa 1900.

The vessel is modelled as a fantastic four-legged beast with an exceptionally characterful cast bronze head, prominent eyes and nostrils, scrolling brows and a broad tooth-filled mouth.

The body is extensively decorated in polychrome cloisonné enamel, predominantly on a vibrant turquoise ground, with scrolling and archaistic motifs in red, green, blue, yellow, pink and white, divided by copper-alloy cloisons.

One of the most distinctive features is the beast’s articulated lower jaw, which hinges downwards to form a large shallow tray projecting from the mouth. A substantial circular aperture, surrounded by a decorative petal-form bronze border, is positioned on the back.

The combination of the zoomorphic form and body aperture places the piece within the Chinese tradition of mythical-beast vessels and censers, although the precise original function of the unusual hinged jaw is uncertain and it is therefore catalogued conservatively.

The exposed bronze head is particularly well modelled and contrasts attractively with the brightly enamelled body. Further cloisonné decoration extends around the flanks, legs and hindquarters, giving the piece considerable visual interest from every angle.

Chinese craftsmen produced zoomorphic ritual and decorative vessels over many centuries, with fantastic animals frequently employed for censers and related objects. This example represents a particularly unusual interpretation of that tradition.

Previously catalogued as a Chinese Qing dynasty cloisonné enamel and bronze mythical beast, the construction, decoration and materials are consistent with a conservative late Qing / early 20th-century attribution.

Condition: Antique condition with considerable character and age-related wear. There are areas of enamel loss, flaking, cracking and pitting, including more noticeable losses around the upper and rear sections of the body. Further surface wear, oxidation, verdigris, deposits and rubbing are present to the bronze and copper-alloy elements. The hinged lower jaw remains present and operational. The piece has not been aggressively polished or restored. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

This Chinese cloisonne enamel and bronze mythical beast censer dates from the late Qing dynasty, circa 1900. The zoomorphic vessel takes the form of a four-legged animal with a cast bronze head, prominent eyes, scrolling brows, and an exposed lower jaw that forms a shallow projecting tray. The body displays a vibrant turquoise ground filled with polychrome scrollwork and archaistic motifs in red, green, blue, yellow, pink, and white, separated by copper-alloy cloisons. A circular aperture with a petal-form bronze border sits on the back, and the piece rests on four cast bronze feet. The surface shows considerable age-related wear, including enamel loss, flaking, cracking, pitting, oxidation, verdigris, and surface rubbing. The object measures 18 cm wide. It functions as a decorative vessel suitable for display on a mantelpiece in a living room, study, or hallway, adding a distinct focal point to interior surfaces.

These censers are decorative metalwork vessels crafted during the Qing Dynasty and earlier historical periods, designed to hold incense or oils for ceremonial and domestic use. The zoomorphic form represents mythical creatures such as the Pixiu or Luduan, traditionally symbolising protection and good fortune.

Artisans formed the vessel base from cast bronze or copper, soldering fine copper wires to form intricate design compartments. These cells were filled with coloured enamel pastes, fired in a kiln multiple times, ground flat, and finished by polishing the exposed metal wirework and un-enamelled cast sections.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-worked wire cloisons with minor variations, small pinholes or pitting in the enamel matrix from kiln firing, and natural surface oxidation on un-enamelled bronze areas. Modern reproductions often display perfectly uniform mechanical wires and synthetic glazes.

A zoomorphic cloisonne censer acts as a sculptural focal object when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table. The vibrant turquoise enamel provides strong visual contrast against dark timber surfaces or contemporary neutral backdrops.

Dust the item using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to clean recessed areas without scratching the glaze. Avoid chemical solvents, abrasive polishes, or moisture immersion, which can degrade the enamel filler or accelerate bronze corrosion.
