Wmf Silver Plated Battle of the Flowers Vase, Jersey Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

This superb stamped WMF large silver plated flower vase is a most desirable piece in its own right. It is a tall, elegant twin handled silver plated vase with floral decoration on the lower body neck, and handles.

The focal point of this impressive vase is the finely detailed cast figure mounted to the front which depicts a pretty young lady with a basket of flowers with two doves. The vase has its original cut glass liner which makes this decorative piece practical to use.

The historical element of this vase is that it is an important piece of Jersey history. In 1902 when King Edward VII came to the throne the people of Jersey held a large and flamboyant celebration entitled the Battle of the Flowers where participants decorated their floats with amazing floral displays and paraded them through the streets in competition and at the end the spectators were encouraged in the practice of tearing and throwing the flowers from the floats, hence the name Battle of the Flowers.

This remarkable piece was given to the owner of the winning float in 1923 and presented by W E Guiton Esq. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Jersey history with a horticultural flower connection.

This tall, silver-plated Art Nouveau vase dates from 1920 and incorporates a clear cut-glass liner at the top with a jagged rim. The piece displays a curved vertical body flanked by two sweeping handles, a detailed cast relief of a maiden holding a basket of flowers on the front, and floral motifs decorating the lower body, neck, and handles. The silver surface reflects light with a bright metallic sheen, and an engraved presentation inscription appears on the shield-shaped cartouche at the base, reading Prix d'Honneur presented by W. E. Guiton Esq. Battle of Flowers Jersey 1923. It stands 49 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. This decorative vessel suits placement on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or hallway as a floral display piece or historical table ornament. The structural design accommodates fresh stems within the removable glass insert, while the weighty pedestal base provides stability on flat surfaces. The combination of figurative sculpture and functional glasswork offers a distinct period display item with local heritage interest.

WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik) is a German manufacturer founded in the mid-19th century, renowned internationally for producing silver-plated table ornaments, vases, and homeware influenced by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements.

These vessels were typically cast using electroplated nickel silver or Britannia metal base alloys, finished with an electroplated silver coating and frequently outfitted with tailored glass liners to hold water safely.

Authentic items feature manufacturer stamps pressed into the base or foot, such as the WMF initials inside a running ostrich or rectangular frame, alongside electroplating weight markings like I/O or OX.

Display the piece centrally on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to function as a sculptural focal point alongside understated contemporary ceramics or monochrome artwork.

Clean gently using a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth paired with specialised silver polish or foam, avoiding harsh chemical dip solutions or prolonged submersion in water to protect the electroplated layer.
