Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1880 Scottish Victorian chest of drawers uses flame mahogany veneer in a warm brown colour with a patinated finish. The piece has a prominent cushion top drawer, leaf-carved corbels flanking the upper section, and a series of lower drawers fitted with round turned wooden knobs, keyholes, and locks, all raised on heavy turned bun feet. Minor chips to the veneer and contraction cracks are present. Measuring 155 cm high, 128 cm wide and 60 cm deep, the main body lifts off the base to facilitate movement. This item works well as a substantial storage chest in a bedroom, hallway or living area.

FAQs

Scottish chests of drawers from the 19th century typically feature substantial proportions, a top cushion or ogee drawer, and deep lower drawers designed to accommodate bulky woollens.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany framework overlaid with flame mahogany veneers, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer linings made from oak or pine.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, period drawer pulls, natural timber shrinkage lines, and wear along the internal drawer runners.

Positioning a substantial mahogany piece in a bedroom or hallway provides visual anchor weight, pairing effectively with neutral wall paints and understated contemporary lighting.

Apply natural beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, keep the timber away from direct heat sources, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent veneer lifting.
