This Victorian watercolour painting by Charles Henry Slater depicts a still life botanical study of summer flowers including roses, azaleas, and blue floral clusters arranged inside a woven wicker basket. Executed in watercolour pigment on paper by the Manchester artist, the composition features a multicoloured palette of pink, yellow, white, and blue hues against a neutral background. The artwork measures 25.5 x 34.5 cms for the image and 45 x 53 cms for the framed size. Suitable for an English Country House design vibe, this piece works best when displayed above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway. The work reflects the Victorian realist style associated with the artist, who exhibited at The Royal Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street.

FAQs

Victorian floral watercolours are 19th-century artworks defined by detailed botanical accuracy, soft light washes, and still life arrangements depicting flowers, fruit, and natural elements.

Artists during this era primarily utilised natural pigment-based watercolours applied to heavy rag paper, card, or paperboard using fine sable or camel-hair brushes.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit natural paper age oxidation, contemporary signature styles, period backing, and technique consistent with 19th-century British watercolour schools.

Mount the artwork in a understated wood or gilded frame and display it above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a curated gallery wall alongside complementary period pieces.

Frame the picture behind UV-filtering glass with an acid-free mount, keep it out of direct sunlight, and maintain a stable environment free from high humidity.
