This George II style double chair-back settee dates from the late 19th century and presents in a warm brown walnut and burr-walnut construction. The piece stands on carved cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, supporting an ergonomic sinuous back with twin vase splats and shepherd's crook arms. The seat features a faded tapestry fabric with historic losses, secured with visible nails to an oak-framed drop-in seat. The timber displays un-restored original surfaces with losses to the burr veneers, whilst two of the upholstery straps beneath the seat are loose. Measuring 99.5 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the settee provides functional seating for living rooms, hallways, or reception spaces in a traditional interior. The structure remains sound and comfortable for daily use while retaining its authentic country house character and worn patina.

A chair-back settee is a form of seating that emerged in the early eighteenth century, designed to resemble two or more chair backs joined together with a continuous seat rail and shared central uprights.

George II style furniture typically features solid walnut or mahogany framing, often embellished with figure-rich burr walnut veneers and hand-carved decorative elements on the splats and legs.

Late nineteenth-century revival pieces often display precise machine-assisted joinery, uniform saw marks, and refined secondary timbers compared to original eighteenth-century examples, which exhibit hand-cut dovetails and hand-planed surfaces.

A chair-back settee works effectively in a hallway, formal reception room, or positioned along a feature wall, providing functional seating while adding architectural structure and warm wood tones.

Maintain burr walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the wood grain and retain its natural patina.
