Produced primarily in Canton during the nineteenth century, these artworks were created by local artisans for Western travelers seeking souvenirs of Chinese flora, fauna, and daily life.

Artists painted directly with gouache or watercolour onto thin, translucent sheets cut from the spongy pith of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant, commonly misnamed rice paper.

Authentic pieces exhibit a distinct velvety, three-dimensional surface texture under light, with organic cellular variations, slight translucency, and occasional micro-cracking due to material fragility.

Hang the piece individually in narrow wall alcoves or group multiple natural history studies together to form an elegant gallery wall above a sideboard or console.

Protect the item from direct sunlight and moisture by framing it under UV-filtering glass with acid-free matting to prevent the delicate organic paper from fracturing.
