Chunky Antique Longines Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Chunky antique Longines pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a good quality stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Longines and it also has the name Baume, the importers of Longines watches to the UK and the Commonwealth.

The movement is protected by an inner cover which has a couple of dates scratched into it, possible past service dates.

The watch measures 55mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop, so slightly larger than the standard 50mm pocket watch. The case is nickel and it is in lovely condition, just light surface marks but nothing serious at all. The inside of the case back has the initials of a previous owner, GB.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed dial looks good to the naked eye but if you look closely there is a short very faint hairline running across the centre. There is also some nibbling around the edge of the dial but when the bezel is shut, only a small chip is visible.

Original lever set hands (to initially set the time, the bezel is opened, the small lever by number 2 is pulled out, and the hands turned clockwise via the winding stem).

The watch comes with a double albert, each chain measuring 20cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Also included is an enamel and silver darts fob with an inscription to the reverse, awarded in 1944-5. A little enamel loss to the dart board.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian pocket watch and chain set dates to 1900, presenting a classic gentleman's library design vibe. The ensemble combines a nickel case, a white enamel dial under a glass lens, and a silver-coloured curb chain complemented by a decorated enamel fob medallion and a T-bar. The watch face displays black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds sub-dial, and original lever set hands. The photograph shows a ribbed round crown or finial atop the watch case, a patterned multi-coloured enamel face on the circular fob medallion, and a metallic chain featuring twisted links. The timepiece measures 55 mm in diameter, excluding the winding stem and loop. This piece serves as a decorative collectible or a display item in a study, library or display cabinet.

Open-face pocket watches became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for their immediate legibility, lacking the hinged outer cover of hunter-style watches. Swiss manufacturers like Longines standardized precision movement production during this era, making reliable timekeeping widely available.

Pocket watch cases were typically constructed from sterling silver, nickel alloys, or gold plate, housing mechanical movement components made of brass and steel. Dial faces were routinely rendered in vitreous enamel over copper to ensure durability and resistance to fading.

Authentic pieces feature clear brand markings on the dial and movement, along with matching serial numbers stamped on the internal case back and movement plate. Movement calibration marks, hallmarked cases, and signature typographical details on the enamel dial confirm period origin.

Pocket watches can be mounted under a glass dome stand on a desk or mantlepiece to showcase the dial and chain. Alternatively, they are frequently displayed within shadow-box frames lined with velvet alongside horological accessories.

Pocket watches should be kept in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from strong magnetic fields. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a qualified watchmaker every three to five years to clean and re-lubricate the gears.
