This Victorian fire bellows dates from circa 1850. Constructed from oak, leather, and brass, the piece displays a warm brown timber finish paired with dark leather panels and polished brass accents. The teardrop body consists of two heart-shaped oak panels joined by studded leather sides, finished with a lattice nose, a turned brass nozzle, and a leather hanging loop at the top for storage or display. Surface marks and natural grain variations show age across the wooden faces and metal hardware. Measuring 44 cm in height, 17 cm in width, and 7.5 cm in depth, this functional accessory suits a fireplace alcove in an English country house interior. The bellows sit beside a hearth to revive domestic coal or wood fires.

FAQs

Fire bellows were essential hearth implements designed to deliver a concentrated stream of air to stoke embers and kindle open fires in 19th-century homes.

Authentic 19th-century bellows were crafted using durable hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, supple leather side chambers, brass tacks, and turned brass nozzles.

Original antique bellows typically show signs of natural patina on the wood, oxidisation on brass components, hand-hammered studding, and aged flexibility or wear on the leather.

Antique bellows can be hung beside a traditional hearth, displayed on an alcove wall, or layered with iron fireside tools to add texture and historical character to a living space.

Preserve the piece by applying natural beeswax polish to the oak and dedicated leather conditioner to the flexible skin, while keeping it away from direct dampness or extreme heat.
